Study: To Save Tigers, Protect Key Breeding Areas

Summary: Tigers are an endangered species, and their population has severely decreased through the years. In an effort to help the tigers, conservationists say that they need to protect the breeding areas of tigers, rather than trying to protect areas around the tigers. If the tigers population is going to grow, they need to breed, so that is why it is especially important that the breeding areas are safe and protected. Less than one third of the remaining tigers are female breeding tigers. Tigers are endangered due to hunting, trade, and habitat destruction, but the main threat is poachers, people who sell and purchase tiger fur, and in some cases, believe that tiger parts can be a form of medicine and increase the health of humans. As a result of the poachers, the number of tigers has dropped from 5,000 in 1998 to 3,200. In order to save the tigers, we need to protect the females in general and ensure that they breed. The plan requires a strong law enforcement as well as surveillant and would cost about $82 million per year.

Opinion: I think that is is extremely important that we take a step to protect the tigers. I also think that it is a good idea to protect the breeding areas, because if the tiger population is to increase, they need to breed. We should spend the $82 million, and then once the population increases, we will not have to spend as much money. But as of right now, this is a very severe issue and I think we need to do something about it.

Questions:
1. Do you think it is a good idea to spend so much money just to protect tigers?
2. Do you think we will be able to increase the population of the tigers? How?
3. What are your feelings about the fact that the tiger population is so low?
4. Do you think we will be able to override the poachers and keep the tigers safe?

  1. I think it is a good idea to spend money on protecting tigers. It will pay off in the long run because we won't have to be worrying about them anymore. If the tigers get taken off the endangered species list, then that is a lot less we'll have to worry about and spend money on. If we are determined and serious about saving the tigers, and it isn't just talk, I think that we will be able to increase the population. The idea of keeping the breeding areas protected is a good one, it should work as long as they really are kept safe. But, not only the females should be protected. The majority of them should, so they can reproduce, but they also need males to have kids. I feel sad that the tiger population has come to this and also a little angry at the poachers and other people that are causing harm to them. I think that if we work hard, we will be able to override the poachers and keep the tigers safe. But we have to take action soon because there isn't all the time in world to do this. There should also be stricter laws against poachers, and if they're caught doing this then they should be given tougher punishments.

  2. I think we should spend all that money. If we don't then the animal could become extinct and once that happens we will no longer be able to see the tiger. Yes I think we can only if we put the effort into it. The main way to help increase the population is to help them reproduce by protecting their breeding grounds. Also we have to protect the males too so they can help breed the tigers. I don't like the idea of how low it is. What makes it worse is that some people these day think that their fur is more important. I don't think that it would be easy to keep the poachers from hunting the tigers for their fur because most tigers don't live in the US, most tigers live in Asia. So because of that it would be harder to keep them form hunting, but if we could get the countries in Asia to make it illegal for proachers to hunt all animals for their fur then we might have a chance at stoping the proachers.

  3. You always hear people talk about how they're spending so many resources to save endangered species, but I'm starting to wonder if it's really nothing but talk. I don't think that much money should be spent because I honestly don't believe it would do anything. The tiger population will not just magically increase. I'm honestly over the whole "save the animals" rhetoric because it seems like nothing is working.

  4. I think it would be good to save TIGERS. I WOULD LOVE TO SPEND ALL MY MONEY ON TIGERS.TIGERS ARE APART OF NATURE. THINK OF THE WORLD LIKE A ROBOT. THERE IS NOW EXTRA PARTS TO A ROBOT. EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE IS IMPORTANT. FOR EXAMPLE, VASES ARE USED TO HOLD FLOWERS. THAT IS THEIR JOB. THAT IT WHY THEY ARE IMPORTANT. TRY TO SAVE TIGERS.THEIR POPULATION WILL INCREASE THEY WILL GET THEIR HABITATS BACK. I AM VERY UPSET THAT THE POPULATION IS VERY LOW.
